Description

[ZOLA (Émile)] - LABORI (Fernand). Zola case. Argument by Me Fernand Labori. Hearings of February 1898. Paris: Librairie Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1898. - In-12, 187 x 125 : (2 ff.), 196 pp. printed cover. Dark brown half-maroquin with corners, ornate smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Semet et Plumelle). Rare first edition including, on 196 pages, the important plea delivered by Fernand Labori, Émile Zola's lawyer, at the February 21, 1898 hearing in the case brought against the writer following the publication of his famous article J'accuse! in the newspaper L'Aurore. ONE OF 5 NUMBERED EXEMPLIES ON JAPANESE PAPER, this one bearing the number 1. This appears to be the only large paper edition. A precious personal copy of Maître Joseph Hild (1870-1945), who was none other than Zola's second lawyer in this case and Fernand Labori's collaborator. His name appears in gilded letters at the bottom of the spine of the binding made by Semet et Plumelle, probably in the 30s and 40s. A very well preserved copy. Provenance: Joseph Hild, with his name gilded at the bottom of the spine. Also included: - JUIN (Lucien Ernest). Émile Zola. Le Triomphe de la vérité. Justifications of the allegations contained in "J'Accuse" by the debates of the "Cour de Cassation". Paris: Librairie parisienne, Arnaud et Cie, 1899. - Brochure in-8, 215 x 136: 16 pp. printed cover. Stapled. Very rare pamphlet, the only one published by libertarian activist Lucien-Ernest Juin (1872-1962) under his own name. Unclipped copy, small tears to edges of cover and leaves.
