[Affaire Lally-Tolendal] - LALLY (Thomas-Arthur de). Mémoire pour le Comte de Lally, (...). Contre Monsieur le Procureur-Général. Paris, Guillaume Desprez, 1766. Large vol. in-4, marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, red title page, red edges (period binding). Two lower corners damaged, covers a little rubbed. The name of the Comte de Lally (1702-1766), from an Irish family who had followed James II into exile, remains attached to one of the most important judicial errors of the reign of Louis XV, which was not lacking in them. Chosen in 1756 during the Seven Years' War to defend French settlements in the Indies and restore order to the administration of the Compagnie des Indes, Lally didn't arrive until April 1758, and soon suffered a series of setbacks. All this culminated in 1761 in the surrender of Pondicherry and his capture by the English as a prisoner of war. Held in London, he made the mistake of asking to go to France to justify himself against the attacks of his many adversaries. Locked up in the Bastille for two years before the start of his trial, he was the victim of an unusual judicial relentlessness: the unfortunate man was sentenced to death and executed on May 9, 1766. It wasn't until the advent of Louis XVI and the combined efforts of Voltaire and Trophime-Gérard de Lally, the general's natural son, that the sentence was overturned on May 21, 1778. Extract from the registres du Parlement. Six mai 1766. Paris, P.-G. Simon, 1766, 22 pp.
