Max Merker, "Walkmühle bei Weimar" View of the Walkmühle situated on the Ilm on a spring day, exceptionally fine landscape painting, in the skilful depiction oscillating between naturalistic and impressionistic conception, this work is on a par with those of Adolf Lin, Carl Arp, Paul Baum or Paul Wilhelm Tübbecke, the Walkmühle near Oberweimar was first mentioned in a document in 1252, making it one of the oldest mills in Thuringia. Today it is home to the KGC 66 Weimar e. V. canoe club.V., Oil on canvas, c. 1920, signed "M. Merker" lower left, inscribed in lead on the reverse of the frame "Max Merker Weimar, Gartenstr. 21" and titled "Walkmühle bei Oberweimar", labelled again in ink with the same inscription, fragment of label on the stretcher "Thüringer Ausstellungsverein bildender Künstler. Zentrale Weimar.", in original condition, somewhat in need of cleaning, framed in attractive shellac moulding of the period, folding dimensions approx. 81.5 x 65.5 cm. Artist information; German painter and graphic artist (1861 Weimar to 1928 Weimar), 1881-89 studied at the Weimar art school under Alexander Struys and Woldemar Friedrich, 1886-89 master student under Theodor Hagen, travelled to Italy (including Rome, Capri and Sicily), participated in the Berlin academy exhibitions, member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft, the Freie Vereinigung Weimarischer Künstler and the Thüringer Ausstellerverband Bildender Künstler, active in Weimar, sources: Thieme-Becker, Scheidig "Die Weimarer Malerschule", Boetticher, Dressler, Saur, Müller-Singer, catalogues of the Berlin academy exhibition and Wikipedia.
