Paris, Didot, 1818. 2 vol. in-4, half brown basane, spines decorated. First edition illustrated with 2 frontispieces (coat of arms of Languedoc, Carcassonne, Narbonne, Limoux & Castelnaudary), a general map of Aude in color, 3 large views (Carcassonne, Castelnaudary & Narbonne), 6 maps and a plan (including the map of the new direction of the Deux Mers canal under the walls of Carcassonne, the plan and elevation of the Marengo bridge, the plan and elevation of the Fresquel acqueduct, the map and robine of Narbonne, the synoptic table of the Canal du Midi etc.).) The Canal du Midi, built in 14 years by engineer Paul Riquet, who financed a large part of the project out of his own personal funds, was admired throughout Europe. Engineers from all over Europe and France came to admire the technological prowess of the work. Even today, the Canal du Midi remains a jewel of civil engineering under Louis XIV. A fine copy in period binding, with small, light angular spotting on a few pages of Volume 2.
