BECKER, Johann Heinrich German brass tobacco box. [Iserlohn] 18th c Rectangular, c. 5 x 16 x 3 cm, engraved on both sides. On cover: Miraculous Catch of Fish scene, signed at right, I.H. Becker, and dated at left, 1770. Inscription in Dutch (sl. illegible): "na ener hart en last en hopen nu de nagh naght / trat jesu in dat schip wat heil wed med gebracht / do bald as op iu wod de nets un hende regen / do wandel seck de last en ene grote segen". On underside: cartouches with allegories of the four continents, two emblematic scenes and coats of arms. Inscription in Dutch: "Ik vaar gelyk een held nae veer gelegen kus[t] / was het niet om het geld veel liever sou ik rusten / en blyven op het land en hou we mijn gemak / en drinken een glas wyn of rook een pyp toebak". Joined: Dutch brass tobacco box. Oval, c. 7 x 13 x 3,5 cm, engraved on both sides. On cover: Adoration of the Magi, unsigned. Inscription in Dutch, divided into two frames on the left and right, hard to read and limited to a few words. On underside: scene with a woman and a deer (?) and inscriptions flattened through use.
