Desbordes 1700 4to: [32 incl. engr. title]-480 pp. (sm. marg. wormtrack from quire S until the end, rare spotting). Contemp. calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands (some stains on back board, joints sl. rubbed, corners sl. bumped). French translation by Élie Bouhéreau (Huguenot who fled to Ireland and became the first librarian of Marsh's Library) of this major apologetic work written by Origen of Alexandria (c. 248) against Celsus, a pagan philosopher. Illustrated is the grand feast organized for the entry into La Haye of Britain's King William III of Orange-Nassau. Nierop: "[the] costliest and most elaborate public display ever held on Dutch soil." The two directors of the festivities were Govert Bidloo (1649-1713), personal physician to King William, and Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age. De Hooghe not only participated in developing the program of the festivities, but was also responsible for engraving the magnificent plates that illustrate this commemorative volume. The superb illustration consists of a portrait of William III by Pieter van Gunst from a drawing by John Brandon and 15 off-text plates engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe with captions in French and Dutch, 11 double-page and 3 full-page. Romeyn de Hooghe's engravings show the procession, the triumphal arches, the Vyverberg and the Binnenhof, and the decorations specially designed for the event, which included works of painting and sculpture and a phantasmagorical fireworks display.
