Funerary relief of Gaius Iulius from Byzantium. 1st century AD. H 53.3 cm, W 40.6 cm. White, fine crystalline marble. Plate with recessed image field. On the left is a woman dressed in a chiton with a himation pulled over her head, probably holding a poppy capsule in her hand. To her right is her husband in Greek bourgeois dress. To his left is a tripod table with food. In each of the lower corners is a miniature servant in a mourning pose. On the upper edge the inscription ΓΑΙΟΣ ΙΟΥΛΙΟΣ / ΒΥZΑΝΤΕΙΝΟΣ. Published in E.
