Description

[DUMAS père et fils ? ; LEFEBVRE-DELAUNAY ? ; MOREAU, Hégésippe ? Pseud.] LEFÈVRE, Louis "L'école des princes. Comédie en cinq actes et en vers [...] Représentée sur le Second Théâtre français le 29 septembre 1843". [Paris ? 1843] In-4°: 142 pages, recto only, brown ink on wove paper, folioed in black pencil. Contemporary eggplant morocco basane, boards framed with a bold and lean cold fillet and gilt fillet, gilt coat of arms in center of upper board, smooth spine framed with double gilt fillet, gilt fillet on edges, gilt chain on covers, gilt edges (rubbed with epidermis, spine and boards ± faded, corners dull and bare). Int. and super ex-libris very fresh. Carefully calligraphed, unabridged final manuscript of a curious "comedy", in reality a somewhat maudlin moral drama in alexandrines, featuring an Enlightenment-style German philosopher charged with educating a future prince. The play went through several trials and tribulations before finally being premiered at the Odéon ("Second Théâtre-Français") and published in 1843 (Paris, Tresse). According to Quérard, it is a posthumous work by H. Moreau (1810-1838). Noël Parfait and others after him see Dumas as the author, unless it's Lefebvre-Delaunay, director of Le Vaudeville. Ref. Quérard, Sup. litt., II:726. - Notice by F. Rahier on dumaspere.com. Prov. Louis-Philippe I (1773-1850), King of the French (super ex-libris; ref. Olivier 2499:11: "curious iron" with arms fig. the Charter of 1830; ms. post. note in pencil opposite title: "This manuscript comes from the library of King Louis-Philippe, to whom it was presented. The binding bears the King's coat of arms").
