First edition of this famous work on Vietnam, containing the 1st known independent map which depicts the coastal region of northern Vietnam and the south coast of China till Macao. The 1st part is a description of Tonkin, the country and its costums, pt. 2 deals with missionary activities in this area. Destined for Japan, the Jesuit priest Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660) arrived at Macau in 1623, but was then sent to Vietnam. He was active there until he got banished in 1645.
