PINTO, Fernão Mendes Les voyages advantureux [...], fidellement traduits de portugais en françois par le Sieur Bernard Figuier [...] Paris A. Cotinet, J. Contemp. half marbled calf, marbled paper boards, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, spr. edges (sl. rubbed, head and tail repaired, flyleaves missing). Second French translation by Bernard Figuier of the travel account by Pinto (1509-1583). He embarked for India in 1537 in a fleet commanded by the son of Vasco da Gama and travelled for 21 years (China, Tartary, Sumatra, Java). He described the politics, religions, laws, etc. of the countries he visited. Having been a merchant as well as a pirate, he later became a mercenary of the government of Goa, was encarcerated several times and was even sold as a slave! Woodcut ornament on title. Ref.
