LEVAILLANT, François Second voyage dans l'intérieur de l'Afrique par le Cap de Bonne-Espérance dans les années 1783, 84 et 85. Paris H.J. Jansen 1794 3 vols, 8vo: xliv-304-[ii], 426-[ii], 525-[4] pp.; 22 engr. pl. (some folding, a few spots, more obtrusive in top margin of the 1st ff. of vol. 3, a few pl. numbers sl. shaved, old repair to plate ii). Contemp. half calf over marbled boards, spines with raised bands, gilt leather title label (boards with some shelfwear). 1st 8vo edition of the report of Levaillant's second expedition. This voyage brought him to Namaqualand, Damaraland, Bechcuanaland and the Kalahari Desert. The pl. depict several peculiar or newly discovered animals and plants, such as the so-called "Snake-necked Bird", the giraffe and two amazing heads of a hippopotamus. Other pl. show local people and some landscape views. Ref. Nissen (ZBI) 2482. - Not in Gay.

Africa - LE VAILLANT (François). Voyage dans l'intérieur de l'Afrique, par le Cap de Bonne-Espérance, dans les Années 1780, 81, 82, 83, 84 & 85. Paris, Leroy, 1790. 2 vol. in-8 of XXIV-384 pp. ; [2]-399 (out of 403) pp. 12 hors-texte plates engraved in black (complete with the plate of the Hottentote). The last 4 pages of volume II are missing, but the text itself is complete (without cuts). Marbled basane, ornate spine bands, red and green marbled title-pages (later imitation binding). Rubbed and worn. Light yellow marginal foxing, rare foxing. First in-8° edition of François Le Vaillant's first voyage. Trained as a naturalist and ornithologist, François Le Vaillant (1753-1824) explored southern Africa on two expeditions, published 6 years apart. He brought back to France a very fine natural history collection, including numerous birds and a giraffe (described for the first time in this book, see pl. 7 and 8). As early as 1789, he tried to sell it "for a modest sum" to the French state, but successive revolutionary governments would not follow suit, much to the explorer's dismay. This important collection was eventually dispersed and sold abroad (notably to Temminck)...

Paris, Dentu, Carteret, Tavernier, An VIII [1799]. 2 vol. in-8 of xii-411 pp. and [2] ff.-376 pp. Rooted calf, richly decorated smooth spines, red and green marbled title and tom. pieces, gilt garland framing the boards (period binding). Very slight rubbing to headpieces, corners and spines. First edition of the French translation, illustrated with a portrait, 3 maps including 2 large ones (one with enhanced contours), and 5 hors texte engravings. A very fine copy of this mythical voyage. "Copies of this translation have become quite rare" Brunet (IV, 376).

Set of 10 finely colored lithographed plates of costumes, taken from the atlas of the first edition of the author's first voyage to Africa (lacking the 2 maps and plate 11) + title and table of plates. Slight foxing, more pronounced on the 2 text pages.
