Description

[SAINT-ÉVREMOND, Charles de Marguetel de Saint-Denis, seigneur de] La defense du pet, pour le Galant du Carnaval. Par le Sieur de S. And. Paris s.n. 1652 In-4°: 8 pp. (light angular wetness, crease to title, second ms. pag. of ep.). Bradel half vellum with mod. corners, grey-blue paper boards, spine titled throughout and gilt fleuronné (ff. dérel., browning to upper board). First edition of this gallant facétie in verse and prose attributed to Saint-Évremond (1613-1703). The "Defense" itself precedes two other parts: "Apologie du pet" and "Advis aux galants, & aux Maistresse". Bardou appropriated it in 1679, and Jules Gay published it in 1866 in his edition of "Pièces désopilantes", along with several other "extremely rare" opuscules. Always useful reading for elegantly getting out of unfortunate circumstances, as this extract shows: "Si pour un pet fait par hazard,/ Votre coeur où j'eus tant de part,/ De moy pour jamais se retire,/ Voyez que dores en avant,/ Vous me donne sujet de dire/ Que vous changez au moindre vent". Enriched with an early bookseller's notice (pasted to the flyleaf), quoting at length from cat. Leber, 6663 (also in BGL and Bibliotheca scatologica). Ref. BGL I:838. - Bibliotheca scatologica 74. Attached, a tiny edition: Martino, Emanuele. - Oratio pro crepitu ventris habita ad patres crepitantes [...]. Cosmopoli, ex typographia Societatis Patrum Crepitantium, 1768. In-32. Garnet chagrin mod. Rare Latin edition, under imaginary address, of an eulogy of the fart translated from Spanish ("Oracion in defensea del pedo", Seville, s.d.). Ref. BGL III:586. - Bibliotheca scatologica 109. - Brunet, Imprimeurs imaginaires, 223 (notice recopied on a flyleaf of our ex.). Prov. Georges Massoulard (mod. bookplate). - Gerrit Komrij (id.). - Old bibliogr. mention opposite title. (2 vols.)
