Powerful illustration by Belgian artist Frans de Geetere (1895-1968), including 1 watercolor and 16 plates. Edition of 200 copies, one of 30 on Montval laid paper (3rd paper after 2 japons and 23 chines, no. 41) with 1 original sketch, 1 watercolor and 10 rejected plates. In his preface, signed by Edmond de Chambley, the author declares that this "epic of the underbelly" (original ed.: Nevers, 1883) is not a licentious parody of Victor Hugo's "Légende des siècles", but "a complement: the complement of a gigantic and luminous work, but incomplete in our opinion" (p. 1).
