In lined slipcase (one edge cracked). Fine copy. First edition inspired by autobiographical facts. During the war, Colette remained in Paris. Her Jewish husband Maurice Goudeket was arrested and imprisoned in Compiègne, but thanks to Colette's connections, he managed to live in semi-clandestinity from 1942 until the Liberation. The war serves as the backdrop for the novel, but it is above all the reflection and brutal feelings inspired by Maurice's arrest that fuel this text in the form of a diary. Edition of 306 copies, one of the 6 first editions on Johannot watermarked vellum, surfin blanc pur chiffon (marked F). Enriched with an aut. s. "Pour Monsieur Goulier, en souvenir d'un anniversaire - le 75ème - dont mes amis (et ma bonne humeur) réussent à faire un beau jour". Prov. Raymond Goulier (dispatch), one of the 16 bibliophiles who, with a.o. bookbinder Henri Creuzevault, were among the first members of the Société de la reliure originale (which became "Les Amis de la reliure originale" in 1974).
