No request for a certificate has been made by the heirs of this work. Note : A major artist in the history of art, Pierre-Auguste RENOIR (1841-1919) was one of the founding members of the Impressionist group. From 1905, he settled with his family in Cagnes-sur-Mer. The Mas des Collettes and the southern sunshine offered a more favorable climate for his fragile health. He painted more and more in his studio from live models or sketches. From this period, the colors of his canvases are shimmering, his pictorial matter more fluid, all in transparency. The work we are auctioning is a mixed technique on canvas, based on a preparatory watercolor drawing entitled "L'étang et le cabanon, vers 1895" (Dauberville Reference N°2630B). Although Renoir's monographs do not identify the location of the original composition, the building and olive tree depicted on our canvas can also be found on the watercolor "Le cabanon et l'olivier, vers 1895" (Dauberville Reference N°2629). His preparatory drawings remained in Renoir's studio until his death, and were referenced after his estate and for the completion of his after-death inventory: -Succession Renoir; Durand-Ruel, Paris - Deposit no. 12408 filed by one of the Renoir sons on April 4, 1921 and reclaimed on May 12, 1921. -Théodore Duret, Renoir, Paris, Edition Bernheim-Jeune, 1924, plate 24, front. Page 66. Lower section. In addition, the borders of the work we are auctioning show the marks of a grid. We know from his friend, the painter Albert André, that Renoir was in the habit of creating small oil compositions in the corners of his canvases. These little sketches," he says, "he didn't want to think of as anything else, and was enraged when, after cutting them out and having them lined, they were brought back to him to be signed and the edges finished, so that they could be turned into paintings." And he concludes that Renoir's best work is to be found in these small canvases.
