GALLE, Cornelis II Flight into Egypt. C. 1637-1678 Engraving, 13,2 x 8,4 cm, vellum, signed "C. Galle", in lower margin "FUGIT FAMILIA SACRA", elaborate 19th-c. Latin inscription in pen on verso (trimmed inside platemark, flattened horizontal fold, traces of former mount on verso). Loose under passe-partout. Good, rare impression on vellum. Exceptional case of a rare biblical engraving by Cornelis Galle II (1615-1678) printed on vellum. Since the plate is not worn, it was probably printed in the 17th c. The Latin inscription on the verso suggests it was subsequently used as an in memoriam card in 1830 for the marriage of one Agathe and Matthieu or for the birth of their child. Ref.
