Ɏ AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SENNIN WITH SCROLL, 18th CENTURY Ɏ AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A SENNIN WITH SCROLL, 18th CENTURY Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) The tall netsuke carved as a sennin holding up a scroll, dressed in long robes. The face with a long, pointed beard and a content expression. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the reverse, the larger generously excavated to accommodate the knot. With a fitted wood stand to display in standing position. HEIGHT 9.6 cm Condition: With wear, age cracks, scratches, and the feet with old chips. Overall good condition, appealingly worn. Provenance: A noted Belgian private collection, acquired in the French trade. Generous asymmetrical himotoshi to the reverse. With a fitted wood stand to display in standing position. HEIGHT 9.6 cm Condition: With some wear and age cracks. Both feet restored. Presenting well. His face carved with a strained expression, the hair falling in strands down his back, dressed in a loin cloth, his breasts and rotund belly exposed. LENGTH 5.4 cm Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, expected age cracks, and one of his hands replaced. Provenance: Collection Gabor Orszagh, Budapest, Hungary. A GROUP OF TWO PYU CARNELIAN 'FROG' BEADS, 200-1000 CE A GROUP OF TWO PYU CARNELIAN 'FROG' BEADS, 200-1000 CE Burma / Myanmar, Pyu city states (200-1000 CE). Each carved as a compact squatting frog, the translucent stones of reddish orange color. Central drilling showing ancient toolmarks and allowing for suspension as a pendant. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Provenance: Estate of Paolo Bertuzzi. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out together with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
