A rare rapier

dating: 1570 - 1580 provenance: Italia, Straight, double-edged blade of slightly hexagonal section, grooved base featuring the inscription 'IOANNES MIF.SE' inside a frame decorated with small dots. Grooved ricasso. Beautiful iron hilt with lower ring-guard, pointed quillon block with vertical grooves, straight quillons with longitudinal grooves and knots at the ends, arches, parry rings and loop guards worked en suite. A double smooth valve inside the lower ring-guard. Large pommel carved with deep and fine grooves. Wooden handle covered with iron wire binding and Moor's heads.

Heavy, gilt non-ferrous metal hilt (rubbed) with eagle's head pommel, oval guard plate and eagle's heads cast as quillons, the blackened grip with double brass wire winding. Slightly damaged, signs of age. Length 85 cm. Condition: II - III
