Skull and sansukumi. Okimono netsuke. Ivory. 2nd half 19th century. Signed in irregular cartouche: Mitsu (Ko) and kao The naturalistically designed skull is surrounded by a writhing thin snake, a slug above the eye sockets and a frog. The three animals, which bring death to each other, are known as sansukumi. Eyes of the snail made of horn. H 4 cm; D 4.9 cm Provenance Estate, North Rhine-Westphalia This object was made using materials for which a CITES permit is required for export to countries outside the EU. We would like to point out that a permit is not usually issued.
