Description
Manju netsuke. Dragon in waves. Metal and ivory. 2nd half 19th century. Signed in seal script: Hironobu Set into the top of this voluminous manju, a writhing dragon made of finely reliefed, gilt metal, the manju itself carved in deep cut with waves and sweeping spray crowns. The pearl, probably made of coral, is missing. Cf. a similar netsuke in the Baur Collection (C 272), signed Katsushika ju Kakuyusai Hironobu. Hironobu enriched his works with mother-of-pearl or coral, or, as here, with metal. Other such netsuke are mentioned in MCI, p. 155, or were auctioned at Sotheby's, London, on 15.12.1976, lot 69, and at Klefisch, Cologne, on 8.5.1994, lot 69. H 2.8 cm; D 4.6 cm Provenance Private collection, Rhineland-Palatinate, acquired on the German art market in the 1970s/80s This object was produced using materials for which a CITES permit is required for export to countries outside the EU. We would like to point out that a permit is not usually issued.
