Around 1800 Inscribed: Gyokusai (added later) The monkey juggler lies asleep, his head resting in his right hand, while behind him a cheeky little monkey reaches for a basket of treats. H 2.2 cm; L 5.2 cm Provenance Estate of Gerty von Gottberg (1934-2024), Düsseldorf This object was made using materials for which a CITES permit is required for export to countries outside the EU. We would like to point out that a permit is not usually issued.

A remarkably large and fine ivory netsuke of Seiobo, the Queen Mother of the West, holding a peach branch in one hand, the other enveloped by her sleeve. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the back, the larger hole generously excavated in the shape of a gourd. The ivory bearing a gorgeously lustrous, deep-yellow patina. HEIGHT 14 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and age cracks. An old, smoothened chip to the edge of the top bun. Provenance: Rolf Schmoll, November 1994. The Sarumawashi wearing loose robes with ornamental designs. Single central himotoshi through the base, beside the signature. LENGTH 5.1 cm Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear. Provenance: Michael Bernstein, New York. Collection Gabor Orszagh, Budapest, Hungary, acquired from the above.
