Summer chawan. Kuro-Raku. Kyoto. Edo period, 18th century. Stamped in the foot ring: Raku Flat, almost hemispherical form with a horizontal, curved notch, on a sturdy foot ring. The dark body covered with a black porous glaze, leaving the foot free. Wooden box, the back of the lid inscribed: Sa'nyu kuro chawan, sign. and kao. Silk bag (shifuku). After the resignation of his father-in-law, Sa'nyu (1685-1739), whose personal raku seal this chawan bears, became head of the raku family in 1708 and held the title of 6th raku master until his retirement in 1728. The signature on the lid inscription is by Sokan Fushikisai (1780-1854), tea master of the omotesenke school in the fifth generation of the Horiuchi family.
