Big chawan. Kuro-Oribe. Mino area, Owari province. Early Edo period, 17th century. Of the kutsugata type. Irregular shape with horizontal grooves, on a low, wide foot ring. Shiny metallic black glaze, leaving the base and foot almost completely free, with a recessed area of whitish, heavily crackled glaze with a diagonal line pattern in iron brown. Wooden box, inscribed in silver lacquer on the lid: Oribe kuro, paper glued to one side of the box, inscribed: Kuro-Oribe chawan. Cotton cloth.
