Pair of chairs with horseshoe-shaped backrest. Huanghuali wood. 17th century. On four rounded legs connected at the bottom with struts on three different levels and with footrest. Round, horseshoe-shaped backrest, supported by the extended front and back legs and curved round timbers. A slightly curved frame underneath the woven seat. The curved board of the backrest with an ornament in a cloud-head-shaped recess. H 97.5 cm; seat height 50.5 cm; W 64 cm; D 54 cm Expert opinion We would like to thank the Thünen Institute, Hamburg for a comparison of the type of wood on the basis of high-resolution photographs Provenance Private collection, Munich, acquired in January 1994 from Spink & Son, London This object was made using materials for which a CITES permit is required for export to countries outside the EU. We would like to point out that a permit is not usually issued.
