Imperial "Yi Zisun" jade disk. Qianlong mark and of the period (1735-1796) and serial number Bi disc carved from light celadon-colored jade in fine openwork. A pair of Kui dragons flank the three-character slogan "Yi zisun" (blessing for descendants) in archaic seal script. The disk is crowned by a boy riding a goat between archaistic ornaments. Finely engraved inscriptions on the sides, "Qianlong nian zhi" on one side and "Zhang zi yibaishier (112) hao" on the other. The disk belongs to a series of archaistic jade works of similar design and size, which the Qianlong Emperor probably commissioned from 1736 to at least 1750. They imitate archaic models from the Western Han dynasty. Several such disks, also numbered, can be found in the palace museums in Beijing and Taipei as well as in various private and museum collections. The numbering on the edge of the series is based on the "Thousand Character Classic" (Qianzí Wen), a poem from the 6th century consisting of 1000 different characters. The character zhang on this disk corresponds to the 112th character in the Qianzí Wen. The highest number of the series known to date is 200, engraved on a disc from the de Luca Collection, auctioned at Sotheby's Hong Kong on April 8, 2011. H 11.7 cm; W 9.4 cm Provenance Private collection, Westphalia, in family ownership for several generations Literature For a discussion of this type of jade, see: Huang Ying, 'Qianlong kuan qianziwen fang guyuqi xintan - Jianlun Qianlong huangdi de zhiyu zhuiqiu', Gugong bowu yuan kan, vol. 7, no. 255, 2023, pp. 83-112
