Stele of Vishnu. Black phyllite. Northeast India, Bihar. Pala period, 12th century. Four-armed, standing on a small double lotus pedestal on a base with Garuda in the center and two adorants. Both main hands broken off, mace and chakra in the secondary hands. On the head the kiritamukuta, the body adorned with earrings, necklaces, bracelets, a belt and a long garland. To his right Lakshmi with fly-whisk and to his left Sarasvati with vina, both standing in tribangha pose. On the back plate, lions rising on small elephants, apsara with garlands, the top removed. Firmly mounted on a profiled wooden base. H 69 cm Provenance Private property, North Rhine-Westphalia, acquired before 1971
