Description

Mobilier français consulat et empire - This book is a synthetic and original study of Consulate and Empire furniture. Its author, Jean-Pierre Samoyault, Honorary General Curator of Heritage, directed the Musée National du Château de Fontainebleau for almost twenty-five years, before becoming General Administrator of the Mobilier National and of the Gobelins, Beauvais and Savonnerie factories. With a precise and detailed treatment of the different categories of furniture: seats, beds, chests of drawers, secretaries, consoles, tables, dressing tables and others, he proposes to recognize the emergence between 1795 and 1815 of two successive styles, formerly grouped under the name of Empire style. Drawing on abundant, often unpublished iconography, his demonstration highlights the activity of major designers (the architects Percier and Fontaine), the considerable role played by the House of Jacob in the evolution of forms, and the importance of clients, whether wealthy private individuals (Récamier, Moreau, etc.) or government circles (the Imperial Court from 1804 onwards). Mobilier français Consulat et Empire is an indispensable repertory for all enthusiasts, connoisseurs and specialists in the decorative arts of the early 19th century. - Gourcuff Gradenigo - 2012
