Description

Francis Harburger - Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre peint [1929-1998] - Born in Oran, Francis Harburger arrived in Paris in 1921. A student at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and then the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in 1928 he became the first boarder at Casa Velasquez in Madrid. In 1940, under Vichy's anti-Semitic laws, he fled Paris for Algiers. The entire contents of his studio were looted by the Nazis and disappeared during the Occupation. After the war, Harburger embarked on new artistic paths and affirmed his profound humanist convictions. He wrote a Humanist Realist Manifesto and then embarked on neo-Cubist research into the presentation of everyday objects, which led to the principle of "hieroglyphics". This prolific painter practiced his art until 1998. The present book, written by his daughter Sylvie Harburger, looks back over the artist's 70-year career, and attempts to bring together all the paintings he produced during his lifetime, a process complicated by the looting of some of his work. - Gourcuff Gradenigo - 2015
