[armored binding] ROZIER (Jean-Baptiste François, abbé): Cours complet d'Agriculture théorique, pratique, économique, et de médecine rurale et vétérinaire, ou Dictionnaire universel d'Agriculture. Paris, Libraires associés, 1793-1805. 10 volumes plus 2 volumes of supplements. 19.5 by 25 cm. Glazed half calf with corners, smooth spine (slightly later binding), marbled edges. Boards with the Society of Writers to the Signet coat of arms in the center. Solid binding, but with numerous minor flaws (faded title-pieces, a few cracked jaws without affecting the solidity of the volumes, a few faded headpieces. Interior with a few rare brown spots, otherwise very good condition. This copy contains 274 plates (engravings, maps and tables) out of a total of 277. The 3 plates bis and ter are missing, never bound. A frontispiece in volume 10. This copy includes the two supplement volumes, in a perfectly uniform binding. 3rd edition, in large format. Abbé ROZIER (1734-1793) was a botanist from Lyon. A member of the Académie des Sciences, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Revolution, a constitutional priest, and sought to create a National School of Agriculture. His comprehensive agricultural course, a pioneer in many technical fields, had a major influence on French agriculture. He died before completing the work, which was finished by CHAPTAL, DUSSIEUX, LASTEYRIE, CADET-de-VAUX, PARMENTIER, GILBERT, ROUGIER-LABERGERIE and CHAMBON. The Society of Writers to the Signet is a private society of lawyers founded in 1594. Since the end of the 18th century, it has maintained an important library with impressive architecture.

Jules MELINE (Remiremont 1838-1925, politician) / Set of 2 drawings of him: 1°) original humoristic drawing of him executed in pen on paper with the letterhead of the Chambre des Députés (1 p in-4), captioned "La Providence de l'Agriculture" (from the time when Jules Méline was Minister of Agriculture, a period he marked with the "Méline tariff", a protectionist law in favor of French agriculture and the creation of the Order of Agricultural Merit, Méline noted "de Pelletan", so we can assume that this drawing is by Camille Pelletan, his colleague in the Chamber / 2°) Original pen and ink wash drawing (27.5 x 35 cm, some missing margins) for the January 1885 banquet menu of the "Association Vosgienne de Paris", Jules Méline can be recognized, embracing a colleague; this drawing, which is a draft, is unsigned, but is probably by a Vosgian artist.
