L'ARISTARQUE Français, political, historical and literary journal. 1815-1816. 272 issues in two volumes. 21 by 34 cm. Contemporary half basane. Boards rubbed, one spine missing. Very good condition inside. Founded in 1799 under the title L'Aristarque Français, journal universel, by Jean-Louis VOIDET (1769-1839). War commissioner, then journalist-publisher, several times convicted of press offenses. The newspaper ceased publication in 1816, only to be revived in 1820 under the title L'Aristarque français, journal du soir. We offer here the complete issue of this newspaper, which appeared under its second title, from N°1 (May 1, 1815) to N°272 (January 27, 1816). The NL is mistaken in saying that it stopped at no. 262. The issues of the journal bear the Royal Stamp of the Seine. The newspaper describes the troubles of the second Restoration in its early days, and includes, for example, the report of Marshal NEY's trial before the Chambre des Pairs, following the Hundred Days...

BABEUF (Gracchus). Le Journal de la liberté de la presse. 22 issues, n°1-22. - Le Tribun du peuple, ou le Défenseur des droits de l'homme. 20 issues, n°23-43. [Paris, 1794-1796]. Together 42 in-8 issues, in sheets or unbound. Revolutionary journal written by Babeuf, whose issues are very rare. It first appeared under the title Journal de la liberté de la presse in 22 issues (n°1 to 22) from September 3, 1794 to February 1, 1795, then continued under the title Le Tribun du peuple in 20 issues (n°23-32 and n°34-43) from October 7, 1795 to April 24, 1796 (Hatin, pp. 247-248 - Tourneux, n°10940 and 10951). The journal had a print run of 2,000 copies. No. 33 was never published, as the manuscript was seized by the police, leading to Babeuf's imprisonment on February 7, 1795. Babeuf continued to edit and publish his journal underground, but was arrested again in May 1796, brought to trial with his accomplices from the Conjuration des Égaux, and guillotined on May 27, 1797. Missing numbers 26, 37, 39, 41 and 43 have been reproduced here in facsimile to make this set "complete". Worm damage to the pages of some issues, some quires browned. The prospectus (8 pp.), in facsimile, is enclosed.
