[16th to 19th centuries] [Caricature] Woodward, George Moutard. Two Napoleonic satirical prints (1) An Attempt to swallow the World!! London, W. Holland, 6 April 1803. Hancol. etching, 33x 25 cm. A large-headed Napoleon stands with feet apart and hands on hips, a globe wedged in his mouth with Great Britain facing out towards the bespectacled figure of John Bull, who says 'I'll tell you what, Mr Boneypartee, when you come to a little spot I have in my eye, it will stick in your throat and choak you!' (2) John Bull shewing the Corsican Monkey! Ibid., Ackermanns, 3 Sept. 1803. Handcol. etching by Isaac Cruikshank after Woodward, 25 x 32 cm. A crowd gathers around Bull as he presents Napoleon, depicted here as a small monkey riding on the back of bear. Added: Gillray, J. Buonaparte, hearing of Nelson's Victory, swears by his Sword to Extirpate the English from off the Earth. Ibid., H. Humphrey, 1798. Handcol. etching, 34 x 25 cm. All framed. Some defects such as browning and stains, but overall in good condition. Not inspected outside frames. A nice collection of Napoleonic caricatural/ satirical prints. (total 3)
