Description

Jean DORVILLE (1901-1986). Project for a minaudière. Mixed media on paper mounted on gray paper, signed lower right. 37.5 x 27.5 cm (slight folds). Jean Dorville was a painter, draftsman, lithographer, theater designer and poet born in 1901. A pupil of Paul Renouard at the École des Arts Décoratifs, he developed his art as a set designer, notably for Charles Péguy's lyrical play Jeanne d'Arc, then in the United States, where he drew for the press and produced fashion sketches for department stores. Supported by patrons such as Jacques Hinstin (de), a close collaborator of André Citroën, and the Marquis de Dampierre, Jean Dorville began displaying his Cubist-influenced art in 1927, helping to create the Théâtre de la Mode. In 1928, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Carmine in Paris. This minaudière project highlights the artist's short but prolific cubist period.
