Description

Jean-Paul SARTRE (1905-1980). Autograph manuscript; 5pages in-4, with erasures and corrections. On the risks of a new world war, and the need for France to be independent and neutralist. "A war threatens. Whoever wins, Europe will be destroyed. I don't think many Europeans want this war. The proportion of sincere warmongers must be about that of suicides. [...] Neutralism wants to propose peace for peace's sake. [...] To be neutral is first and foremost to want to regain economic independence. France must therefore do without American aid, develop its industry and rebuild the country, for "a government enslaved to prepare for war alongside an immense power loses its sovereignty. It is reprimanded and denounced as a bad ally. A government that declares itself resolutely peaceful thereby regains its sovereignty". It was also necessary to combat the defeatism of the French population by giving them a new social order. "A France actively serving the cause of peace, a government giving everyone something to defend by basing its authority on a policy of justice - that's all it would take to dispel the atmosphere of defeatism and fatalism in which we live. Neutralism means wanting international politics to be the result of France's own efforts, rather than the state of France being the mere result of the interplay of international forces.
