This portrait of a woman wearing a large hat is captioned above: "Me René de St Marceaux en chapeau de jardin va cueillir avant le dîner des prunes, à Cuy St Fiacre". And, in the margin: "Analyses et Portraits par M.P. pour R.H.". Verso, under the word "Haricots" crossed out, caricature of a lanky man, and drawing of five small sailboats on waves. [Marguerite de Saint-Marceaux, née Jourdain (1850-1930), widow of painter Eugène Baugnies, married sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux (1845-1915) in 1892. In her hotel on boulevard Malesherbes, she ran a renowned musical, artistic and literary salon; she was one of Mme Verdurin's models.
