Description

Louis-Ferdinand CÉLINE. 2 L.A.S. "LFC", [Klarskovgaard August 1948], to Marie Bell; 1 1/2 pages (small tear repaired with adhesive) and 1 fol. page. Wednesday [August (?)] "Dear Marie. I'd like to kiss you too, but I realize that it's absolutely impossible, alas, to meet you now that I'm in this impossible-to-reach sub-sub-hole!!!! No roads, not even for cars! No railroads, no buses! and so far from Copenhagen! and it's forbidden to drive from Copenhagen to here... All this sounds ridiculous, cinematic, operetta - but alas, these are the facts. I'm still strictly a prisoner on parole - nothing to say - you'd hate me after wasting your time and friendship on suspicious, tedious, costly, derisory comings and goings. We're used to these conditions, but for the rest of us it's sheer madness".... 18th [August]. "I'm sorry too! But what can I do? Too late, you see! Too late! In Copenhagen it was easy. But here in the devil in such grotesque conditions... If you only knew! No, we must give up!"... Letters to Marie Bell (Du Lérot), nos. 8 and 9.
