"It will be impossible for me to persuade Le Gaulois to delay publication of my novel until February 1st. But it seems to me that we could split the difference. I'll get the novel to run only on January 20; and you, on your side, try to start from the 22nd to the 24th. That way, we'll each have put our shoulder to the wheel. By the way, aren't you mistaken when you count two months for the publication of Goncourt's work [La Faustin]? I know this work does thirty feuilletons at most. It seems to me that you could save a few days. I have the greatest desire to please you, but I am bound by a treaty"...
