It was published in June 1890, following publication in the Revue des Deux-Mondes on May 15, June 1 and June 15. Binding signed Jadis (on the slipcase), full bottle-green morocco with foliage decoration, ribbed spine, gilt head, covers and spine preserved, untrimmed, a few freckles, slipcase lined. This is not a mosaic binding, but a decorated binding. The motifs are painted, as if lacquered, with ironwork to delimit each part. Scattered foxing, 3 leaves with gaps filled in the margins. Bound by Jadis (unsigned), full bottle-green morocco with foliage decoration, ribbed spine with attractive fleuron on the corners of the boxes, gilt head, covers preserved (without the spine) and lined, untrimmed, a few freckles, lined slipcase. This is not a mosaic binding, but a decorated binding. The motifs are painted, as if lacquered, with ironwork to delimit each part. An astonishingly fine copy of one of Maupassant's great novels (Talvart & Place, XIII, 252).
