Jean-François CHAMPOLLION (1790-1832). L.A.S., Paris November 1, 1823, to François Artaud, "Conservateur du Musée, Directeur de l'École des Beaux arts, Palais St Pierre" in Lyon; 1page small in-4, address (framed, the wax seal closing the letter has been glued under the signature). "I address to you, my dear Egyptian, Mr. Bowes Wright who happier than we have visited the sacred land and spent good hours amidst the colonnades of Thebes or in the tombs of the Pharaohs. I beg you to make it easy for him to see your Museum and anything else that might interest him in your city"... An old note at the bottom of the letter reads: "given by Mr. Artaud, director of the Lyon Museum". [Archaeologist François Artaud (1767-1838) founded the Musée de Lyon, where he collected the antiquities of Lugdunum; he supplied Champollion with numerous hieroglyphic inscriptions for his work. John Bowes Wright (1779-1836), English traveller, Egyptologist and collector, was a friend and correspondent of Champollion].
