Sarah BERNHARDT (1844-1923). L.A.S. "Sarah", [1907], to Félix Duquesnel; 8pages oblong in-12 with her cipher, emblem and motto (on 2cards split at the folds). About Duquesnel and André Barde's play La Maîtresse de piano, premiered at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt on October 3, 1907. She is obliged to announce the last performances, losing 600F "per day since the premiere"; she gives details of the accounts, including 2292F "strict expenses"... "Moreover, the troupe currently playing at my place is a troupe hired for your play. I come back with my own, which costs me 1000fs a day. You can see how much money I'd lose, and I'm alone to support all this - I have no sponsors and no partners. [...] Your play is charming, and my intention was to let it alternate with the Dame [aux camélias], the Bouffons and Adrienne [Lecouvreur]; but Victor Ullman quite rightly pointed out to me that I would have to pay the troupe for your play every time they didn't play, and mine when the Maîtresse did. I couldn't get out of it"...
