Description

A set of five classic ornaments, including two full labrets and three ear ornaments, all carved in obsidian. Obsidian is a magical material, with its transparency and brilliance, its deep black, but also its fragility and hardness. The Mixtecs are reputed to have been the finest craftsmen in pre-Hispanic Mexico, and we readily believe it when we admire the finesse and transparency of one of the three "orejeras" in this set. Mixtec or Aztec culture, circa 1200 to 1500 A.D., Mexico Obsidian, age-related wear, minor knocks and one restoration on a labret (broken and glued, original piece), otherwise superb old polish and excellent state of preservation D. and L.: 3 cm (each) See for comparable and similar examples of ear ornaments p. 244 pl. 172 in: Museo Nacional de Antropologica de Mexico Arqueologica, Ignacio Bernal, Ed. Aguilar Mexico 1967 Provenance : Jean Roudillon Collection before 1965
