Description

A set of five rare labrets with inlays or additions. Three of the labrets in this set are carved monoxyle in obsidian and inlaid with a pale green stone. A fourth labret is carved in an emerald-green stone whose transparency can be appreciated when placed under light, and is also adorned with a tumbaga cabochon. The fifth labret in this set is carved in iron pyrite and inlaid with what appears to be an amalgam of resin, itself adorned with a multitude of turquoise-blue beads embedded in the resin. Mixtec or Aztec culture, circa 1200 to 1500 A.D., Mexico Obsidian, pale green stones, tumbaga (alloy of copper, gold and silver), iron pyrite, resin and pearls, minor accidents on two labrets, old wear and oxidation, otherwise superb old polish and excellent condition.
