Description

Beautiful cedar veneered sewing box, opening with a lock and cloverleaf key in a brass escutcheon. The interior is lined with green leather and decorated with gilded palmettes, including a mobile box and a double bottom; and a mobile tray lined with red leather including various mobile trays and sewing utensils, including an 18k gold needle case, Vieillard et coq hallmark (Paris, 1798-1809), M.O. "E. T. M." (8.7 g); vermeil hook, lictor (1798-1809) and swan hallmark (5.8 g); pair of steel and gold scissors, owl hallmark (Gross weight: 6.6 g); gold thimble (3.3 g); etc. Lid with ten thread reels, and probably formerly darkened with a vanished mobile mirror. Probably original pink silk cushion trimmed with horsehair. Empire period tabletterie work H. 11 cm - W. 25.5 cm - D. 16.5 cm Minor accidents (A mirror on top of a compartment is broken).
