First edition of Montaigne's translation of Raymond de Sebonde's Théologie naturelle by Raymond de Sebonde. The author, a Spanish philosopher and theologian from the second half of the 14th century, taught science in Toulouse around 1430, where he died in 1432. He was the author of several works, including La Théologie naturelle, in which he set out d'establir et verifier contre les athéistes par raisons humaines et naturelles tous les articles de la religion chrestienne (Montaigne). This treatise was highly prized by Montaigne's father, and it was out of filial affection that the great philosopher translated it. Once the translation was completed, it was printed at his father's express wish. The translation is preceded by a sonnet by François d'Amboise. A fine ruled copy, in a binding bearing on the first board the name Aubin and on the second De La Noue. The copy is listed in Techener's 1858 catalog (II-6977) and in bulletin no. 37 of the Damascène Morgand bookshop (Nov. 1895, no. 27141). Techener indicates that the binding was made for Aubin de La Noue, probably a member of the illustrious Breton La Noue family. Beginning of a split at one hinge, missing headpieces and a stain on one cover. Small paper loss on leaves A1 and Gg4, small wormholes reaching the last 20 leaves. Provenance: Aubin de La Noue (? supra libris).
