Description

Pierre de LARIVEY. Trois comédies des six dernières... A l'imitation des anciens Grecs Latins & Modernes Italiens. A sçavoir : La Constance. Le Fidelle. Et les Tromperies. 3 parts in one volume in-16, ivy-green jansenist morocco, 5-rib spine, interior lace, gilt edges ( Thibaron Echaubard). Cioranescu, 12620 // De Backer, 545 // Tchemerzine-Scheler, IV-16-18. I. 90f. / A-G12, H6 // II. 149f. (of 150, the last blank missing here) / A-M12, N6 // III. 78f. / A-F12, G6 // 70 x 129 mm. First edition of three comedies by Pierre de Larivey: La Constance, Le Fidelle and Les Tromperies. They are paginated separately, each with its own title. As mentioned above, Larivey's plays are inspired by Italian plays, which he wished to bring into line with French theatrical taste by arranging them, Frenchizing the dialogue, adding popular French idioms, deleting scenes and roles, and doing whatever was necessary to make the play interesting for a French audience. Here La Constance is taken from La Costanza by Girolamo Razzi, Le Fidelle du Fedele by L. Pasqualigo and The Deceptions of Gl'Inganni by N. Sechi. This edition is rare, and bibliographers have long thought that this work had no other editions (cf. De Backer, no. 545), but Tchemerzine indicates another edition published the same year in Paris by Jean Du Brayet, Jean de Bordeaux and Claude de Roddes, which leads him to conclude: which proves once again that the bibliography is never complete. Note that the title page of our copy for Les Tromperies is different from the one reproduced by Tchemerzine, with the author's name written in round letters. All this does not detract from the rarity of the edition. A very fine, well-adjusted copy. Slightly darker back.
