[HISTORY OF HUON DE BORDEAUX, peer of France & Duke of Guyenne. Contenant ces faicts, et actes heroïques, compris en deux livres. Autant beau & recreatif discours que des long temps aye este leu. Recentement reveu & corrigé. In-8, long-grained green morocco, triple fillet, 5-rib spine nicely decorated with small irons, interior roulette, gilt edges ( Koehler). Brunet, III-382. 757 (last blank sheet missing here) / A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, Aaa8, Bbb4 / 98 x 160 mm. New prose edition of Huon de Bordeaux, medieval chanson de geste. Neither the author nor the date of this poem is known, but it is presumed to have been written around 1200 by an artesian trouvère. The song recounts the prodigious adventures of Huon, who, betrayed by the felon Amaury, kills Charlemagne's son to avenge his brother who has fallen into a trap. As a penance, the emperor sends Huon on a long-distance mission that leads to countless adventures, during which he is protected by the dwarf Obéron, king of enchantment. Huon de Bordeaux was extremely popular in the Middle Ages and well into the 19th century. It was reworked many times, in prose or verse, and a multitude of editions exist. The present edition, published in Lyon in the early 17th century, is illustrated with a woodcut on the title, repeated on the verso of the last page. A fine copy in green morocco by Koehler. Worm damage in the upper margin of quire R5, one leaf angularly missing (Tt1) and a few minor stains. Provenance: Léon Cailhava (?, note on endpaper, October 21, 1845, no. 549) and bookplate.
