Description

Louise LABÉ. Euvres de Louïze Labé lionnoise. Revues & corrigees par ladite Dame. In-8, brown morocco, covers entirely decorated in Renaissance style with arabesques in gilded fillet and mosaic of red, black and lemon morocco, reserving a hollowed-out medallion in the center, framed red morocco listel with angular motifs on a riddled background, 5-ribbed spine decorated in the same manner, edges decorated with broken gilded fillets, triple inner fillets, gilded edges, case ( Gruel). Brunet, III-708 // Cartier, Tournes, 335 // Tchemerzine-Scheler, III-781. 173-(1 f.) / a-l8 / 93 x 146 mm. Second edition published one year after the original, and just as rare. Louise Charly, known as Labé and nicknamed la belle Cordière, after her husband's profession, was born in Lyon around 1525, and was one of the most famous women of her time in literary circles. She had received a thorough education from her father, learned Greek and Latin, excelled in music and excelled at fencing and horseback riding. Dressed as a man and under the name of Captain Loys, at the age of sixteen she followed the troops sent by François I to Roussillon and took part in the siege of Perpignan under the orders of the future Henry II. Married, she devoted herself to literature and gathered around her an elegant society of poets and artists, all of whom praised her gifts and merits. She died in 1566. This edition is a verbatim reprint of the 1555 original by the same publisher, with only the errors corrected. More polished and better printed than its predecessor, it nevertheless contains three minor pagination errors. The title is adorned with a large wood-engraved arabesque quatrefoil frame. The ornamentation is completed by a large diamond-shaped finial, 4 entablatures and 6 woodcuts. The Débat de Folie & d'amour, in prose, is printed in round type, while the elegies and sonnets are in italics. A splendid copy in a striking binding by Gruel. Minor angular restoration to 4 leaves (g5-8) and minor restoration at the head of a few others. 8000
