Description

Jaques GRÉVIN. Le Theatre... Together, the second part of the Olimpe & de la Gelodacrye. In-8, red morocco decorated with a large Renaissance gilt fleuron with azure irons in the center of the boards, 5-nerved spine, interior lace, gilt edges on marble ( Chambolle-Duru). Brunet, II-1737 // De Backer, 341 // Tchemerzine-Scheler, III-496. (12 f.)-328 / *8, A4, B-X8, Y4 / 93 x 160 mm. Extremely rare first edition, dated 1561. Copies are generally found with a new title dated 1562. Jacques Grévin, also a doctor, published this edition of three plays when he was barely twenty-three. It contains one tragedy, César, and two comedies, La Trésorière and Les Ébahis, and also contains the sequel to l' Olimpe, as well as various sonnets. This edition was produced before the quarrel between Grévin and Ronsard, as can be seen from the lengthy Élégie de Pierre de Ronsard à I. Grévin at the beginning of the volume. Edition illustrated on the verso of the title with a fine woodcut portrait of Grévin at the age of twenty-three. A fine copy despite a few minor stains to the binding. Provenance: Charles Pelliot (June 15-17, 1914, no. 320).
