Pierre de DEIMIER. La Nereide ou Victoire navale. Les Destins heroïques de Cleophille & de Nereclie. In-12, blue morocco, triple fillet, nicely decorated 5-rib spine, interior lace, gilt edges ( Lortic). Brunet, II-569 // Cioranescu, 7440. (12 f.)-312 / a12, A-N12 / 75 x 144 mm. First edition. Pierre de Deimier, born in Avignon around 1570, distinguished himself as a poet at the court of Marguerite de Valois. He died around 1618, leaving several works of poetry and a Traité de l'art poétique with reflections on language and versification. The main subject of his Néréide is the Battle of Lepanto, which he had already sung in 1601 in his Austriade. Composed of five books, it is followed by La Première partie du Printemps de Vaucluse (The First Part of the Vaucluse Spring), which includes a collection of various poetic works and occupies the last hundred pages of the volume. A very fine copy.
