François DAIX. Polydore, or Le Printemps des amours. In-12, lemon morocco nicely decorated on the boards with a large floral garland with mosaic blue and white morocco florets in frames, 5-nerved spine with reminder of the decoration, interior lace, edges gilt on marble ( Thibaron). Drujon, II-1143 / Cioranescu, II-23153. 6 f.-119 f.-(4 of 5 f., the last probably blank missing here) / A-K12, L10 / 76 x 139 mm. First edition in which the author celebrates the charms of his mistress Polydore. François Daix, a lawyer at the Marseilles parliament and jurisconsult in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, was also a poet. The work is dedicated to Guillaume Du Vair, then President of the Court of Justice in Marseille and First President of the Parlement de Provence. It is composed of numerous pieces of poetry: sonnets, odes, chansons, stanzas, complaints, elegies, etc., most in French and some in Latin. A delightful copy, finely bound by Thibaron. A restoration to the title. Provenance: Étienne-Marie Bancel (bookplate, May 8, 1882, no. 356) and Robert Hoe (bookplate, IV, November 11, 1912, no. 872).
