Second edition published two years after the original edition by Lotrian in Paris. It is very rare and as sought-after as the first (De Backer). Michel d'Amboise was born in Naples around 1500, the natural but acknowledged son of Charles d'Amboise, admiral of France and the king's lieutenant-general in Lombardy. Fatherless at the age of 11, he was raised with his brother Georges, accompanied the latter to the battle of Pavia where Georges was killed, was taken in by his aunt Catherine d'Amboise, fell out with her and devoted himself passionately to poetry. He is the author of numerous works and was praised by his contemporaries. His works are rare. The Epistres veneriennes contain 30 epistres veneriennes, Les fantasies dudict esclave, les complaintes, regretz et epitaphes, Avec [34] Rondeaulx & cinq balades damours, i.e. all the works that had appeared on the day of publication. A fine copy despite the faded spine. The De Backer catalog stated that the last quire was shorter in the lateral margin. It is indeed missing 1 mm. Last leaf restored, small old wetness in the upper margin of some twenty leaves and old annotations on the endpapers. Provenance: Hector De Backer (I, February 17-20, 1926, no. 256).
